Shivamogga, July, 2015 : B. Ramu, Chief Executive Officer of Shivamogga Zilla Panchyat, on Wednesday called upon the newly elected grama panchayath members to develop leadership qualities and administrative skills.
He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop organized for gram panchayath members who belong to the Self Help Groups and Farmers Groups promoted by Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS).
He said, the elected representatives should consider the membership of grama panchayath as an opportunity to bring positive transformation in rural areas.
As gram panchayath was an apolitical organization, its members should not allow politics to creep in their functioning, he said.
The government was providing adequate grants for rural development through Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Swachh Bharat Mission, National Rural Livelihood Mission schemes and so on. The gram panchayath members should monitor the implementation of projects taken up in various villages under these schemes. The grama sabhas should not be held in a mechanical way. Instead, the meeting should become a platform to discuss the problems in villages and to find out appropriate solutions for them, he said.
The programme had been organized by SMSSS. Bishop Francis Serrao SJ, the bishop of Shimoga and the President of SMSSS, Fr. Veeresh V Moras, Director of SMSSS, and Mr Mohammad Badagannur, the resource person for the day were present. 48 women and 12 men gram a panchayath members who belong to SHG groups promoted by SMSSS benefited from this program.
