Shimoga, December 08, 2024: The Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS), the development arm of the Diocese of Shimoga, proudly celebrated the Decennial Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Francis Serrao SJ, marking ten years of impactful work in sustainable development and community empowerment. To commemorate this significant milestone, SMSSS organized a mega free health checkup camp at St. Joseph's School Campus, Sagara, Shivamogga.
The health camp was a collaborative effort with the esteemed Doctors and staff of Father Muller Medical College and Hospital, Kankanady, Mangalore. A dedicated team of 68 medical personnel conducted a variety of checkups including General Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Audiometry, Dermatology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG), Orthopedic, Psychiatric, Breast Cancer Screening, Cancer Screening, Oncology, ECG, BP, Sugar, and Blood Tests. The Asha Kiran Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addiction, Bhadravathi, also participated, providing valuable information about their services. The camp witnessed a remarkable turnout with 1,440 patients benefiting from the comprehensive medical services provided, and free medicines were distributed to all attendees. Those requiring further treatment were referred to Father Muller Hospital in Mangalore.
The inaugural program was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ, the Bishop of the Diocese of Shimoga and the President of SMSSS. In his address, he praised the rich heritage and professional expertise of the medical team, expressing heartfelt gratitude for their invaluable service to the community.
Rev. Fr. Felix Joseph Noronha, former president of SMSSS was honored for his Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee of life. Chief Guest Shree Channabasava Swamiji of Viraktha Mata, Shikaripura, emphasized the importance of adopting positive thoughts to enhance both mental and physical health.
Another Chief Guest, Sri Kagodu Thimmappa, Ex-Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, lauded SMSSS for its commendable work and pledged his support in reaching out to the rural poor. Shree Fayaz Ahmed of Jamiya Masjid Sagara, also a chief guest, called for the establishment of a medical wing in Sagara, offering his place for service and extending heartfelt congratulations to SMSSS for their impactful work.
Dr. Jnaneshwari Jayaram of Father Muller Hospital provided an overview of the hospital's facilities, including cancer treatment services. SMSSS Director Fr. Pius D'Souza elaborated on the objectives of the health camp, highlighting the importance of access to quality healthcare for a healthier life. The event was also graced by Sr. Molly Sharon BS, Superior of St. Joseph Convent, Sagara, and Sr. Benica Fernandes, Superior, Mankale, Sagar.
The program concluded with celebratory remarks and the birthday celebrations of Ms. Anitha, Ms. Jaysheela, and Mr. Vincent, who were honored with a cake-cutting ceremony, adding a festive touch to this successful and impactful event.
